By virtue of the historic British Maritime traditions and vast coastline and trade, the South Asian sub-continent has played a dominant role in shipping. This area has always been a major source of seafarers for British shipping. Following independence from Britain in 1947, the countries in South Asia put greater emphasis on training and producing their own Merchant Navy officers for their fleets. As members of the Commonwealth, all U.K. systems of training and certification were adopted. Over the years sufficient certificated officers were produced for employment beyond their national flags on vessels of most nationalities and Flags of Convenience. Since the past three decades both officers and ratings are vastly being employed worldwide. Having followed U.K. standards there was no problem in adopting the STCW Conventions.
